The Essentials

What sets Poetry on High Apart?

Welcome to Poetry On High at Lay Low—a vibrant weekly gathering dedicated exclusively to original work from emerging and established poets, playwrights, and spoken word artists.

While there are many open mics around, Poetry On High was created with a distinct purpose: to lift the heart upward and leave everyone who attends truly refreshed. We focus on original performance pieces crafted to inspire, encourage, and stir genuine hope. Our vision extends beyond the stage—we aim to create a space for authentic dialogue long after the mic turns off, where audience members and performers can connect over the ideas and stories shared throughout the night.

Whether you are stepping up to the microphone or settling in to listen, you'll find a welcoming space designed to heal, inspire, and elevate.

CLARITY BEFORE YOU ATTEND

Details & Decorum

We are committed to fostering a safe and respectful environment for every voice.

Please review our essential guidelines below.

What is the code of conduct for the evening?

We foster a space of deep respect and active listening. Harassment, discrimination, or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. We ask all attendees to remain mindful of the performers and each other, ensuring the room remains a safe haven for vulnerable expression. Out of respect to our poets, we require no talking or cell phone usage.

For poets and playwrights: Are there any restrictions?

Taking into account that not everyone expresses ideas in the same way, we require that the words used do not involve swearing or be explicit. While we celebrate creative expression, we also respect those in attendance.

When do I pay as an attendee?

You will pay when you arrive. We prefer cash.

Is there a dress code?

There is no strict dress code. Come as you are, whether that means casual evening wear or your favorite vintage suit. The vibe is intimately lit and relaxed, so prioritize your comfort and personal style.
